Abstract
Pendulous crop which is associated with abnormal expansion of the crop, is a physiological disorder, which causes malnutrition, emaciation, dehydration and elimination of turkey carcasses, the cause of the abnormal dilation of the crop is just unknown. The aim of this study is to compare the morphometric and histopathological changes the crop of turkeys with healthy and pendulous crop. This cross-sectional study was carried out on The four turkey breeding farm white turkey farms, and from each farm, 5 turkeys with healthy crop and 5 turkeys with pendulous crop were identified and after being sent to the slaughterhouse, the crop was separated from the esophagus and the contents inside the crop were removed, the outer surface of the mucous membrane. It was washed with distilled water and placed in 10% buffered formalin. After dehydration, clarification and impregnation with paraffin, 5 micron thick slices were cut and stained with hematoxylin and eosin method. The morphometric results of different crop structures showed that there is no significant difference in the thickness of squamous, mucosal muscle, submucosa, internal and external muscular layers and serous layer between the healthy and disease group, but in the disease group, the histopathological changes of the mucous layer include parakeratosis and Cytoplasmic swelling, dilation and adenitis of mucous glands and necrosis and atrophy of musclularis layers are present compared to the healthy group (p ≤ 0.001). various factors, including genetic factors, nutritional deficiency, metabolic and infectious diseases, by affecting the crop, cause tissue damage and pendulous crop.
