English

Due to the countless benefits, they have for the health of animals, birds, and humans, medicinal plants have gained great popularity. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a prominent traditional medicinal plant from the Fabaceae legume family. The main compound in licorice root is glycyrrhizin. Licorice extract has significant antimicrobial effects (antifungal, antibacterial, antibiotic, antiviral, disinfectant, and antiparasitic). A total of 270 one-day-old Japanese quails, regardless of gender, were randomly divided into 6 equal groups with 45 birds in each group.
The first group received a diet based on corn and soybean. The second, third, and fourth groups, in addition to the basic diet, received 200, 400, and 800 milligrams per kilogram of licorice root extract, respectively. The fifth group received the basic diet and 500 milligrams per kilogram of bacitracin. Improvement in feed conversion ratio, average body weight, and feed intake was observed in quails that had 400 milligrams of licorice root extract added to their diet. It has been shown that licorice extract has immunostimulatory and antibacterial properties that can help improve growth performance and feed conversion ratio in birds and potentially serve as a suitable alternative to growth-promoting antibiotics in enhancing quail performance.
